JUST OUT! Final Results – Ouen Press Short Story Competition 2016

The very best 2016 competition entries have been published in one anthology entitled Journey through Uncertainty & other short stories features physical and emotional journeys, endured and enjoyed, with humour and courage – each one a testimony to a place, or an event, or a sentiment.

A collection of thought provoking and inspirational travel tales.

Contributors were encouraged to relay through their writing how they might have been changed by a ‘journey’ or how their travels allowed them time to reflect and reinforce, or challenge, accepted viewpoints.

Eire based business writer and housewife, Emma Smith won top place for her work Journey through Uncertainty. Other prizewinners include former UK government advisor and diplomat John Frew, for Danny on the Beach, and London based actor, writer & adventurer Sophia Jackson-Gill for The Land of the Free.

We were delighted again with the global reach of the competition as we promoted a worldwide submissions policy, reflecting our interest in talented writers regardless of geography.

And what’s more, the show of interest in the competition from both experienced writers and those new to the short story form has encouraged us here at Ouen Press to continue with the annual competition. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS – The Real Story – Creative Nonfiction

The Real Story is an Arts Council funded writing organisation devoted to developing creative nonfiction in the UK.

In our online journal, we publish original nonfiction short stories, including personal essays, lyric essays, reportage, narrative journalism and short memoirs of under 3,000 words.

Submissions are free and accepted on a rolling basis (simultaneous submissions ok), accepted pieces will be edited for publication.

Shooter invites submissions for “Cities”

The fifth issue of Shooter Literary Magazine will take the geographic theme of Cities, drawing upon the vitality and diversity of urban life – or, depending on the writer’s perspective, the grinding challenges of the crowded, fast-paced metropolis.

Writers may submit short fiction, non-fiction and poetry to do with historic, contemporary or futuristic cities, engaging with some aspect of the politics, pressures and allure of the urban experience. On the non-fiction side, insightful travel pieces revealing something unusual or unique about any city around the world are especially welcome.

Prose should fall between 2,000 and 7,500 words, and poets may submit up to three poems by October 16th, 2016. As always, Shooter seeks to uphold a high literary standard, so the quality of the writing is paramount. A vividly conjured urban setting is not enough to make a compelling story: we’re looking for pieces that explore some aspect of human experience unique to a city, stories that lead with character and illuminate the universal by means of the particular. Similarly, sharply observational, insightful poetry is preferred to obscure experimental fare.

Here we go!  Launching the 2016 Ouen Press Short Story Competition

Ouen Press are pleased to extend an invitation for writers to submit an original short story in line with this year’s theme – ‘The Journey’. Winning authors will receive cash prizes and be published in an anthology early in the New Year. This follows on from the success of last year’s competition and subsequent publication of the winning entries in Last Call & other short stories.

The short story must be true, but can be about a journey in any setting, of any distance, or at any time. The judges will be particularly interested in well-written pieces about encounters that have profoundly thrilled, possibly terrified or provided humour. The ideal submission will elicit a strong emotional response conveying travel experiences where the writer’s life has been transformed or enlightened as a result.
