The Cro Magnon’s first Short Story Competition deadline is nearly upon us. For your chance to win £100 make sure that you have submitted your entry before 13.00 on 30th September 2015 which is already just around the corner!

Our theme “Primitive Humanity’ has provoked some fascinating entries already. We have been tentatively reading through the pile of submissions and we have been bowled over by the feast of imaginative, brutal, and beautiful stories we have found. We must say a big thank you to everyone who has already entered! For the rest of you (who are no doubt frantically still redrafting your entry) we wish you the best of luck and look forward to receiving your words.

The Cro Magnon is proud to announce its 2015 Short Story Competition: Primitive Humanity.

We are looking for short stories of 3000 words max. composed on the theme: Primitive Humanity. We want you to find something eternal which has been present in humans from our primal beginnings to the civilised present, whether it is our bestial rage, passionate lust, the complex relationships we strive to maintain or just our love of art. Your story can be set anywhere, at anytime, but it has to say something about our primitive nature. Be bold, be ambitious!

Hello everyone,
Here’s all the short story news from the ShortStops’ blog over the past fortnight.

Lit Mags

Things on the lit mag scene are rather “powerful” this month – check out Issue 38 of Neon Magazine – and Battery Pack makes its debut. And Don’t Do It has unveiled Issue 5, the Electricity issue. For your further reading pleasure, Bunbury’s fifth issue is the Mythology special. The deadline for this month’s Writing Maps contest has passed, but it has launched its new map, The Big Gay Writing Map.

The Manchester Review Issue 12 is now live and they are also calling for submissions for Issue 13. The Casket of Fictional Delights is calling for your Christmas stories! HeadStuff wants your writing, as does The Cro Magnon, for their website and perhaps for their travelling show.

Competitions

The London Short Story Prize is now open for entries, deadline Sep 19th. The new short story competition from VCLL is aimed at those from Leicester and the surrounding areas, deadline 12th Sept, and Magic Oxygen are running a new short story and poetry contest to create a tropical word forest, deadline 30th November.

More competitions: The 3rd annual A Spot of Hysteria Writing Competition run by the UK Hysterectomy Association (deadline Aug 31); the RAC’s national short story competition on the theme of Driving in Europe, deadline 11 Sept; Creative Industries Trafford’s flash fiction competition, deadline Sept 15th; and the Historic House Short Story Comp (26 Sep) wants stories inspired by or set in a historic house.

Workshops

The Berko Summer School is holding a series of one-off masterclasses, including a short story masterclass with Adam Marek tomorrow, July 29th.

Last Minutes & Gentle Reminders

The Sean O’Faolain short story competition and  Writeidea’s national short story contest, The Writeidea Prize both close on July 31st.

Lit Mags

We’re thrilled to welcome two new lit mags to our list: Control Literary Magazine, “a free online magazine dedicated to giving you the best literature and artwork from new writers and artists”, and The Silver Lynx Sporadical, “a new literary journal based in Aberdeen… Our interest lies in only what can hold it”.

For your reading pleasure, Issue 7.1 of Flash! is out now, as is Spontaneity’s Issue 4, Only Human. Have a read of Jotters United’s Retro Issue, the June issue of Long Story, Short: The Art of Losing and Don’t Do it magazine’s Issue 4: Translations.

Popshot is open for literary submissions on the theme of Time. Here Comes Everyone would love to consider your short stories for the Boy/Girl issue and, starting early, The Casket of Fictional Delights is calling for your Christmas stories! HeadStuffwants your writing, as does The Cro Magnon, for their website and perhaps for their travelling show.

May is National Short Story Month in the US, but it’s always short story month round here… Check out our round-up of what’s been happening on ShortStops’ blog over the past fortnight:

Lit Mags and Competitions
The flurry of new lit mags continues: welcome to The Short Anthology: “each issue uses the work of one photographer as the stimulus for a collection of short stories”, and Storyboard magazine: “every month we have a new theme to base your writing around”. The Short Anthology got straight to it on the blog and introduced its first issue.

The Grind are now open for submissions for Issue 3, and HeadStuff also wants you.  The Cro Magnon wants your writing too, for their website and perhaps for their travelling show. Check out Confingo’s first issue, now on sale, and Structo’s brand new website.

White Rabbit unveiled its new Wonderlands White Rabbit Walks: From Pleasure Gardens to Power Station. Fictions of Every Kind has produced its first podcast with stories and music. 

Last Minutes & Gentle Reminders
Today is the deadline to send Story Fridays your stories on the theme ‘In Focus’ for their May event. The Manchester Review is open to submissions for Issue 12 until mid May, and Myths of the Near Future is calling for submissions from under-25s for the Money issue by May 30th. You have until May 31 to submit to Jotters United’s new short story comp on the theme of ‘Spirit’.

April Round-Up II

Another month almost over! Here’s our roundup of what’s been happening on ShortStops’ blog over the past fortnight:

Lit Mags and Competitions
We welcome two new lit mags to our list: Don’t Do It, “taking in fiction, poetry, critical writing and reviews from around the globe”, and HeadStuff “a collaborative website interested in a wide range of topics”. HeadStuff introduced themselves on the blog and would love you to submit something.

Talking of new and exciting: Writing Maps has launched a new monthly contest and lit mag and Writeidea announced a new national short story contest, The Writeidea Prize, deadline 31 July. More contests: the 3rd annual A Spot of Hysteria Writing Competition run by the UK Hysterectomy Association is now open for entries (deadline Aug 31), and the Historic House Short Story Comp (26 Sep) wants stories inspired by or set in a historic house. Jotters United announced Issue 2 and a new short story comp (deadline 31 May) on the theme of ‘Spirit’. Long Story, Short is calling for submissions of longer stories and the editor tells us what she’s looking for. The Cro Magnon – Call for Submissions

The Cro Magnon (www.thecromagnon.com) is a literary magazine of new writers huddled around a fire telling stories, exploring new meaning, and creating. From prehistoric conversation to the novel, the rudiments of writing are the communal exchange of unfixed abstractions, constructs, and images. This unchanged archaic root binds our publications to a wider process – a process whereby the epigenesis and entropy of a text are included in our il n’y a pas de hors-texte approach to publishing.

We are looking to invite writers to join us at this Fireside. Whether you write short stories, plays, poems, or essays and reviews, we want your words. We want the thinkers, the originals, and the primal transgressors among you to submit your work.

All submissions will be considered for our website, but exceptional work also has the added chance of being produced by The Cro Magnon Theatre in one of our travelling Fireside performances, or being printed in our first publication of The Cro Magnon. Soon we will also be announcing our inaugural paid Short story competition, so check in regularly for updates.

All submissions should be double spaced, and emailed to editors@thecromagnon.com with a brief cover letter, your name and a word count. Please also make the subject of your email ‘Short story(poetry/play/essay/review) Submission’ and your name. For any enquires please email henry@thecromagnon.com he will be more than happy to help.
