2017 Ouen Press Short Story Competition on ‘Taste’

Calling out to all talented wordsmiths for compelling, imaginative stories

For the third year running Ouen Press are delighted to extend an invitation for writers to submit an original short story in line with this year’s theme – ‘Taste’. Winning authors will receive cash prizes and be published in an anthology early in the New Year. This follows on from the popularity of past competitions and subsequent publication of the winning entries in Journey through Uncertainty & Last Call.

The short story must be a work of fiction that explores the concept of ‘Taste’ within its theme.  The ideal submission will be a well-crafted, compelling story – the judges will be particularly interested in imaginative interpretations of one or more of the various meanings that could be derived from the term ‘Taste’.

Deadline for entries is 31st December 2017 – full information and rules of the competition, which is open to writers worldwide, can be found at www.ouenpress.com

The Smut Slam originated in Boston in 2011, became thoroughly established in Montreal that same year, and has since traveled all over the world, with standing-room-only shows in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a whopping 100+ crowd in Atlanta last November, and a sold-out show in Boston in 2016.

Story Fridays Call for Submissions

We’re looking for your stories!  The next Story Fridays in September has the theme the Speed of Light. Take it literally or metaphorically… Perhaps we’ll go to the dark side of the moon, or the furtherest far away star, or perhaps we’ll get caught up in the state of the nation, and enjoy how political fortunes can change at the speed of..well. You get the idea. Story Friday – The Speed of Light will be on Friday 22nd September at Burdall’s Yard in Bath, deadline for submissions is the 11th September.

We are looking for short stories or monologues, fact or fiction (but mainly fiction), maximum 2,000 words. If you want to enter a flash piece that can work too. No poetry, thank you. Please check that you are available to come along to Bath on the 22nd September before you submit. We like the writers to be in the audience for these events.

We have some wonderful professional actors who are very happy to read your story if performance gives you the jitters. Let us know when you submit if you’d like someone else to read your piece.

For more information, or to listen to the kind of stories we like, click here.

JUST OUT! Final Results – Ouen Press Short Story Competition 2016

The very best 2016 competition entries have been published in one anthology entitled Journey through Uncertainty & other short stories features physical and emotional journeys, endured and enjoyed, with humour and courage – each one a testimony to a place, or an event, or a sentiment.

A collection of thought provoking and inspirational travel tales.

Congratulations to the prizewinners and many thanks to all who entered the competition – visit www.ouenpress.com to view the FINAL RESULTS.

Eire based business writer and housewife, Emma Smith won top place for her work Journey through Uncertainty. Other prizewinners include former UK government advisor and diplomat John Frew, for Danny on the Beach, and London based actor, writer & adventurer Sophia Jackson-Gill for The Land of the Free.

We were delighted again with the global reach of the competition as we promoted a worldwide submissions policy, reflecting our interest in talented writers regardless of geography.

And what’s more, the show of interest in the competition from both experienced writers and those new to the short story form has encouraged us here at Ouen Press to continue with the annual competition. “Tree of Light” at Lighthouse Poole

White Rabbit’s Bernadette Russell is telling her story The Tree of Light at a Wintertime Event at the Lighthouse Poole on Sunday 27th November. It’s a folktale for the 21st century, a reminder of the power of hope and love in troubled times.

“A very long time ago, this land was all forest. At the heart of the forest was a very special tree, that everyone spoke of, but only a few had seen: the Tree of Light. It is said that this tree is the keeper of all our hopes and dreams… it is said that in the darkest hours of night as we lay dreaming, something magical happened…

But this was all a long time ago. The forest is no longer here. The forest  is only a distant memory to the eldest citizens, the forest’s whose whispering trees can still be heard. Where there were trees, there are roads, houses, shops…so what becomes of our hopes and dreams now? And what happened to the Tree of Light?”

Come and find out, and listen to this magical mid winter story, full of forest creatures familiar and unfamiliar, night time adventures and poetry. Plus you will be invited to add your own stars to the Tree of Light, and the opportunity to have your wishes come true.

After a Long Break *drum roll* Bunbury is Back!

Hello dear Bunburyists!

We have had quite the busy time of it here at Bunbury Magazine HQ! Firstly, we would like to introduce you to our new addition, Siân S. Rathore who has climbed aboard and will be taking care the poetry. Taking it for walks, feeding it, making sure it gets enough affection. Most importantly, Siân will be editing it. This makes us happy. We’re thrilled to have her on board as her achievements and skill-set are amazing. We look forward to working with her on other projects in the future too!

At the beginning of August, Co-directors Christopher and Keri only went and blinking got married, becoming Mr & Mrs Moriarty! In true form, they had a poetry slam, the winner of which was Fiona Nuttall who won a canvas painted by Keri. They cut the cake with a chainsaw so, pretty standard stuff really.

After that, we went to Edinburgh for the Fringe festival as we do every year. We had a great time and, as usual, we handed out our interview packs, made new friends and met up with old ones too. There are lots of pictures and reviews on our website, bunburymagazine.com to look at from our trip. The Edinburgh Fringe special feature will be out later on in the year so we’ll keep you up to date with that.

Anyhoo, back to this issue. The theme was Atmosphere and we have loads of wonderful things for you to gaze upon and get cosy with including an interview with the wonderful and always lovely David Hartley, some fabulous art and photography and the usual selection of top class fiction and poetry and much, much more.

To get your hands on the latest lovely package of joy, click on the gorgeous front cover below (it was done by the amazingly talented Rachael Broadhurst. As always, it is available for Pay-What-You-Like (though we do recommend £3 for all the hard work our team puts into it.)

We really hope you enjoy this issue as much (if not more!) as previous ones. We always are taken aback by the quality of pieces submitted to us. We say it every time, if it wasn’t for your submissions and kind words, we wouldn’t be here.

We will be back in December with our Terra-themed issue. This will also include the fruits of our trip to Edinburgh, with loads of interviews from some of the stars of the Free Fringe. In the meantime, please do check in with us on social media. We have them all and everything!

Flashers Club will be holding its inaugural open mic night on Thursday 10th November, 7:30-11:00pm, at Smokey Joe’s Coffee Bar, Cheltenham. The mic is open to all writers of short fiction between 300 and 1,000 words. It’s open genre. Published or unpublished, old hand or debut, everyone’s welcome. You can book tickets in advance or come along on the night. There’s a small entry fee (£2 + booking fee online, £3 on the door), all of which goes to the charity First Story. First Story places professional writers into schools in deprived areas to encourage children to write.

Are You Sitting Comfortably? MONSTERS

Award winning White Rabbit  are seeking short story writers interested in having their work showcased at their next event “Monsters.”

They say we always get the monsters we deserve, that they are simply a dark reflection of ourselves, our fears and our desires. What makes a monster?
Are they amoral, inhuman beasts, eyes glittering with madness? Or beautiful and seductive beings, tempting us to sin? Or, worse of all, misunderstood creatures, unfairly hunted, lonely, unloved? We are hosting an evening of short stories read aloud, chosen and read by the team at White Rabbit. The evening will include B-movie visuals, monster mash music from the 1920s to now, ghastly games, free food served by a lycanthropist waiter, and blood drenched cocktails.
