Talking Tales is open for submissions for the next event on Tuesday 10th December 2019.

Here is our manifesto:

  •  the ‘To Hull and Back Anthology 2019‘ will be launched on the night
  •  many of the authors featured in the anthology will be reading
  •  you could read too – this time stories of 500 words might get our vote
  • The Right Honourable Christopher Fielden will be the Leader of the House

Talking Tales #24 – 20th August – Bristol

Talking Tales is open for submissions for its flash fiction special event on 20th August. What’s special about it? You’re going to be there and you’re going to be reading.

If that seems a little presumptuous, let me explain. The flash fiction special is celebrating the art of very short stories, poems and all other forms of creative writing. We have an upper limit of 300 words and we have confidence in you.

We believe in your writing – whatever form that may take. We believe in your ability to knock our socks off at the beginning, the middle or the end. We believe you know that Talking Tales is a lovely night of stories, with a warm audience in a great venue. And we believe…this is the important bit…that between the tennis, the barbecue, the warm Summer nights, the paddling and the 99s – we believe you’ll pull your digits out and give us 300 of your best by 9th August (submissions close then). 

Hosted by the awesome Christopher Fielden who will also be launching two of his writing challenge anthologies on the night. Are you in them? If not, there’s no excuse not to be in the next ones.

Join Bristol’s First Flash Open Mic – Flash in Hand

The opening night of Bristol’s new open mic event, Flash in Hand, is on Monday 13th May. Of all the things we might associate with Mondays, this is probably one of the most uplifting!

We know that stories can take us anywhere, from the depths of the human condition to the sky and beyond. We normally read stories in the privacy of our own heads, whether curled up on the couch or cocooned in our commute, but sometimes the best way to connect with stories is with other people. Flash fiction is ideally suited to this. From beginning to end, no more than 500 words, a whole story, a whole journey from beginning to middle to end that will leave you moved, laughing or struck by insight. And that’s not the only taste it will leave in your mouth: we have a bar.

So, whether you want to come along to listen (£3.50 on the door) or to read (free!), we’ll see you there, 19:30 onwards. Let us know you’re coming via the Facebook event:

Masterclasses and author talks for short fiction lovers

For five years Novel Nights has been at the forefront of live lit in Bristol & Bath, programming author talks with authors like Maggie Gee and Nathan Filer.

This year we’re launching masterclasses, taught by experienced academics and writers. Tom Vowler will teach our first class, From Spark to Flame: Forging The Short Story on 27th April.  Tom is short fiction editor at Unthank Books, has published two short story collections and his third novel is out soon. He teaches at Arvon Foundation and Plymouth University.

“A masterclass to unlock some of the mysteries of this dazzling literary form. Aimed at both emerging and published writers, the class will explore how stories are crafted, how you can bring them to life, give them voltage and vitality.” 

On September 8th, Vanessa Gebbie will lead a day-long flash-fiction masterclass in Bristol. Tickets in advance.

“An in-depth look at flash fiction, aimed at any writer who is interested to start or continue an exploration of this sparkling form. You will create  many fresh pieces thanks to tried and tested games and exercises –  your tutor never asks you to share your writing, so you are unencumbered as you play freely and focus on meeting your new characters, voices and forms within forms.” Vanessa Gebbie has won awards for both prose and poetry, including a Bridport Prize and the Troubadour. Author of ten books, including five collections of short fictions, two of poetry and a novel, she is also commissioning and contributing editor of Short Circuit: Guide to the Art of the Short Story (Salt).

On May 11th we’ve invited Michael Loveday, judge of the 2019 Bath Novella-in-Flash Award, to discuss writing a Novella-in-Flash and to share insights into the judging process.

Talking Tales #22 – 9th April – Bristol

2019 needs a Talking Tales don’t you think? There’s a lot going on this year, so between now and 9th April I fully expect there to be at least five seasons, 64 crucial Parliamentary votes and another pancake day.

Why not another pancake day? You will need sustenance and fortitude in preparation for a night of Talking Tales stories and performances. You will have some sweet syrupy words and some sharp biting ones, I’m sure – it’s always that way.

Filling and moreish, you have my word. You’ll have your words, in fact – if you submit. Submissions close on Friday 29th March.  We love your submissions!

Big laughs, big stories, small stories.

Talking Tales #21 is delighted to feature the launch of the To_Hull_And_Back_2018_Anthology_front_coverTo Hull and Back humorous short story anthology 2018.

All hail Christopher Fielden.

Many of the authors will be reading their listed and commended stories – including the winner Mr (nostrangertoTalkingTales) John Holland. You’ll laugh and there are some unexpected turns in some big stories to listen to as well.

But Stokes Croft Writers want more. There’s room for a couple of shorter stories too so why not submit and be in with a chance of being part of this brilliant night. Something around the 500 word mark would be ideal.

British Summer Time could not possibly end without one more of these… Talking Tales #20 is now open for submissions.

Much will be familiar. The unbridled glee of Stokes Croft Writers, the unleashing of bright, evocative and quite possibly scary tales, the warm waft of supportive smiles from a welcoming audience. Once again, we are proud to be a part of the awesome Bristol Festival of Literature that you will know so well.

But as it’s still Summer time – we thought we’d throw you a googly and deliver TT#20 from Café Kino in Stokes Croft, just a few yards from our home at Left Bank. We shall be downstairs, where writers will congregate like ladybirds in your window frames – as serene and colourful, of course.

Writers Unchained of Bristol are delighted to be open for submissions once more for our second 2018 Story Sunday event on Sunday October 7th when ten writers will be invited to take to the Southbank stage in Bedminster to enthral us with their talent.
Our theme this time is The Fall  which you may interpret any way you like.

Any genre is acceptable, your story may be set in the past, present, future, or might be just a moment, crystallised in words. As ever we love to be shocked, stunned, terrified or delighted.

If you’d like to send a story for our consideration, please observe the following:

  • wordcount 500 – 1500 – complete stories please, no extracts
  • your story can be published or unpublished as long as you have the right to read it out
  • deadline midnight Sunday September 23rd. 
  • only submit if you can read on Sunday October 7th between 7.30 and 9.30 pm at Southbank Club, Dean Lane, Bedminster, Bristol BS3 1DB. We’ll let you know if you’ve been chosen around a week beforehand.

Time to get off your lilo and get writing for the mid-Summer edition of Talking Tales.

Talking Tales #19 is sun ripened, Solstice appropriate and beach-ready for anything you can throw at us. So go on, show us your black and white bits – on a page that is, constituting a story for the telling.

The people will be warm. The beer will be chilled. Wine will flow like…wine…and it all promises to be a roasting hot Saturday night in, always cool, Stokes Croft. Wear flip flops and your best shades and listen to a brilliant mix of stories and surprises. All you have to do is write a story (200 to 1500 words should do it) and be ready to read it out on the night. Then send it to us so we can choose the best mix for the best of evenings.

SHORT STOPS - TT18

It is my pleasure to announce a full cast of Stokes Croft Writers are ready, waiting, fit, able and back in the country for Talking Tales #18. No gratuitously titled ‘work commitments’ (in what looked suspiciously like a beach) in Thailand. No snuffles. And with a full complement of Talking Tales badges… probably… Bristol awaits.

After a fantastic start to the 2018 season, April marks Talking Tales’ 3rd birthday. For this special night you will be hosted by the Stokes Croft Writers’ official photographer:  Thomas David Parker. So, as we hoover the red carpet and erect barriers for the riff-raff paparazzi, you have four things to do:

  1. write a stupidly brilliant story – 200 to 1500 words should do it
  2. send it to us – via e-mail to the address below
  3. prepare your best threads and polish the silver snuff-box
  4. practice your most photogenic of poses for Tom’s discerning lens

There will be doors and they will be thrown open at 6.30pm.

There will be brilliance – there always is, it could be yours.

Flash Fiction Festival UK, 2018

Booking is now open for the 2018  Flash Fiction Festival UK funded by Bath Flash FictionAward, taking place at Trinity College, Stoke Hill, Bristol, Friday evening 20th July – Sunday late afternoon, 22nd July this year, 2018.

We’ve a great line of up workshops, talks, readings and book launches, by leading flash fiction writers and tutors from the UK, the US, Ireland and Germany as well as open-mic sessions for all participants.

TFlash-Fiction-Festivalhere’s an informal picnic and open-mic on Friday night in the extensive grounds where you can  meet and mingle with fellow flash fiction fans. We’ve a raffle with great prizes including a week’s writing retreat in Italy, a festival long mini competition with prizes, a bar, a book shop and the opportunity to submit fictions you begin at the festival  workshops to Flash Fiction Festival Anthology Two which will be published in 2018. All contributors receive a free copy.

We’d love you to come to learn about, write and read flash fiction and have fun with other enthusiasts. Beginners and experienced writers from all backgrounds welcome.  Places going fast. Talking Tales #17 – 17th February – Bristol

We’re going early for the first Talking Tales of 2018 – long before the weather, we’ll be the warm front you’ve been waiting for. Before the crocuses have bloomed, before you’ve started your third diet, before you’ve completely negated the effect of a dry January – we’ll be there for you.

There will be stories hot and cold, short and long, entertaining and hearty-breaking. There will be laughs, there will be surprises and there will be slush, probably – but of the city-snow variety rather than the ‘Love Is…’ cartoons. We’ll be looking ahead to the Spring, not looking back at the midweek romancing and tbh, we don’t know what we’ll get – it depends on what you submit. So get to it – surprise yourself and surprise us.

I said we’re going early and we are – a 6pm start. This will save you from the worst of weekend reality TV and leave you the second half of Saturday night to get home and read the Penguin classic of your choice. Send your thanks with your submission.

We made it to the darker recesses of 2017 and by way of celebration  Talking Tales #16 is going to make a present of some laughs. It’s that special time of year again when the distant sound of sleigh bells is Rudolph and his mates going to the launch of the To Hull and Back Short Story Anthology 2017

  • Unwrap prize winning stories of humour, comedy, the surreal and absurd, but most of all…THE FUNNY!
  • Hear the stories placed first, second and third read by their very own authors – live, on the night, with words coming direct from their mouths to your ears.

In November Cameryn Moore brings even more Smut Slam to the UK

You know what a poetry slam is, and maybe you know about story slams, too. Now it’s time for SMUT SLAM, a fast-paced storytelling open mic based on real life, real lust, real sex. The Smut Slam features real-life, first-person sex stories, guest stories from our panel of celebrity judges, and also THE FUCKBUCKET, a convenient and funnily named receptacle for all your anonymous questions and confessions!

Things are changing a bit for Smut Slam UK. Cameryn is leaving us for a little while due to visa complications, but there will be amazing guest hosts filling her shoes till she gets back.

Wednesday 8th November:  Stand Up Tragedy Presents SMUT SLAM London: “Big Bangs” at the Dogstar (389 Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, SW9 8LQ ) This night will be hosted by guest host Miranda Kane who will be filling in for Cameryn in London for Autumn 2017.

Tuesday 14th November: SMUT SLAM Bristol: “Fireworks” at The Brunswick Club (15-16 Brunswick Square, Bristol, BS2 8NX). This night will be hosted by guest host Sam Scott.

NOT A SMUT SLAMMER? Don’t worry. The audience is in for a good time at SMUT SLAM! Sit back and enjoy. All we ask is: – No interrupting. – No heckling. – No necking in the front row. Doors open at 8pm, and the smut starts slamming at 8:30. Admission is only £10 at the door, 18 and over please!

SMUT SLAM is CREATED by Cameryn Moore, an award-winning playwright/performer, sex activist and educator, and, oh yeah: a phone sex operator. She is super excited to introduce London and Smut Slam to each other! When not performing, taking calls, or actually having sex herself, Cameryn writes Sidewalk Smut: custom type-written pornography as street performance and literary art.

The Smut Slam originated in Boston in 2011, became thoroughly established in Montreal that same year, and has since traveled all over the world, with standing-room-only shows in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a whopping 100+ crowd in Atlanta last November, and a sold-out show in Boston in 2016.

 

A Night of Crime (Bristol): call for submissions

The next event from Writers Unchained of Bristol is on Sunday October 22nd  between 7 and 9 pm at Southbank Club, Dean Lane, Bedminster, Bristol BS3 1DB and will be A Night of Crime.

The crime needn’t be perfect but we know your writing will be. Bring us victims or perpetrators, good cops, bad cops or no cops at all. Bring us a criminal tendency or full-blown guilt. As ever we love to be shocked, stunned, terrified or highly amused.

If you’d like to submit, follow our guidelines. We will choose the stories that appeal to us and fit with the other parts of the programme.

Or you can just come along to listen! Tickets will £5 on the door.

It’s back – full-on and foolhardy. Full of promises more reckless than the last… Talking Tales #15 is now open for submissions.

SMUT SLAM is CREATED by Cameryn Moore, an award-winning playwright/performer, sex activist and educator, and, oh yeah: a phone sex operator. She is super excited to introduce London and Smut Slam to each other! When not performing, taking calls, or actually having sex herself, Cameryn writes Sidewalk Smut: custom type-written pornography as street performance and literary art.

The Smut Slam originated in Boston in 2011, became thoroughly established in Montreal that same year, and has since traveled all over the world, with standing-room-only shows in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a whopping 100+ crowd in Atlanta last November, and a sold-out show in Boston in 2016.

The glorious 12th – never more so! I don’t mean the start of the football season and I don’t mean shooting of any other kind. I mean Talking Tales #15 is now open for submissions and is going to shake its tail feathers at you Saturday 12th August 2017.

Fresh from their one-date stadium tour at the Bath Fringe Festival, Stokes Croft Writers bring Talking Tales back home for the holidays. As the masses curse the width of Cornish country lanes, as the drips from a melting 99 ruin many a t-shirt and as the school run equinox occurs (equal distance from the last to the next), you…yes you…can fly safely to our roost.

Writers with a story that is all your own work, that you can read (in less than 10 minutes) and that will make our audience warble in appreciation – submit now!!!

You know what a poetry slam is, and maybe you know about story slams, too. Now it’s time for London’s first-ever SMUT SLAM, a fast-paced storytelling open mic based on real life, real lust, real sex. The Smut Slam features real-life, first-person sex stories, guest stories from our panel of celebrity judges, and also THE FUCKBUCKET, a convenient and funnily named receptacle for all your anonymous questions and confessions!
