“an award-winning, high quality, printed journal for fiction and poetry from writers born or living in Scotland. The editors believe there is a need for an energetic, ambitious magazine dedicated exclusively to the best in new Scottish creative writing.

Gutter now invites submissions of up to 3,000 words of fiction (short stories, novel extracts) or 120 lines of poetry. Preference will be given to provocative work that challenges, re-imagines or undermines the individual or collective status quo. We are also interested in work that relates Scotland to an international context.
3000 words maximum per short story
• Up to 4 stories maximum to be submitted per person per issue
• 160 lines of poetry maximum
• Please consider the magazine format when sending experimental works
• All work submitted must be previously unpublished in print or on-line
• We respectfully request no simultaneous submissions
• All submissions must be emailed to
• Please send word doc or docx only
• For concrete poetry, please send PDFs
• Please include your name, address, postcode, and word count on the title sheet.

At this stage no payment is available for published submissions but successful writers will receive a free two-year subscription (4 magazines) worth £22.00.”
